An utmost importance was given to the document
order in the Ottoman Empire. For this reason, dates, with very few exceptions,
are certainly present in the documents and registry books in the Ottoman
Archives. Since it is known that the value of the document without history will
be weak as a source and will cause confusion, it has been paid attention to the
date on the document. However, the use of different types of dates sometimes
only as a year without specifying a month causes difficulties in determining
whether the date of the document is Hijri or Julian. In this article, first of
all, the importance of the use of date in the correspondence in the Ottoman
Empire will be dealt, the problems encountered in the determination of the
dates on the documents will be discussed and some practical information will be
given about the types of dates and the rules of usage for the accurate
determination of the dates seen in the Ottoman documents. Subsequently, we will
present the measurements that will help to determine whether the date is Hijri
or Julian with only a year without specified day and month. Thus, it will be
relatively easier to determine the dates of the documents in historical
researches and to penetrate their contents, and the possibility of doing wrong
will be minimized.
