Individual and Professional Autonomy of Nursing

Abstract

Autonomy is the ability to choose between opposite desires andinclinations. Autonomy is the distinguishing characteristic of professionalism. When autonomy is mentioned in relation to professions theconcept of autonomy takes on more individual dimensions. The individual autonomy that belongsto members of a profession has an important place in that profession’s attainment of professionalstatus. Individual autonomy is built socially. Professional autonomy reflects individual autonomyand finds meaning in supportive social relationships. It is seen, up to now, that nursing has beenless autonomous than the other professions in thehistorical process. The lack of autonomy has different dimensions depending on individual andprofessional. The more the level of autonomy increases among the nurses, the bigger the job satisfaction and the satisfaction of the patients. That’swhy it is very necessary for the nursing to be accepted as a professional job that the nurses should be able to take the control of the situationsthat affect them and the patients they are givingheath care. It is also necessary for them to maketheir nursing applications depend on scientificknowledge. The aim of this study is to take the attention to the importance of autonomy that is oneof the indispensible elements of nursing, on theway to being a scientific discipline, for the nurses. It is also aimed to display basic knowledge,understanding and the terms that can contributethem to have autonomous behaviors in the environments of the practice

HEMŞİRELİKTE BİREYSEL VE PROFESYONEL ÖZERKLİK

Abstract

Özerklik birbirine karşıt istek ve eğilimler arasında seçim yapabil- me gücüdür. Özerklik otonomi profesyonelliğin ayırt edici bir özelli- ğidir. Mesleklere ait özerklikten söz edilse de, özerklik kavramı daha çok bireysel boyutta ele alınır. Meslek üyelerinin sahip olduğu birey- sel özerklik o mesleğin profesyonel statü kazanmasında önemli bir ye- re sahiptir. Bireysel özerklik sosyal olarak inşa edilir. Mesleki özerk- lik bireysel özerkliğin yansımasıdır ve destekleyici sosyal ilişkiler içinde anlam bulur. Tarihsel süreç içinde hemşireliğin günümüze ka- dar diğer mesleklerden daha az özerk olduğu görülmektedir. Hemşi- relikte özerklik eksikliğinin bireysel ve profesyonel boyutları vardır. Hemşirelerde özerklik düzeyi arttıkça iş memnuniyeti ve hasta mem- nuniyeti de artmaktadır. Bu bağlamda, hemşireliğin profesyonel bir meslek olarak kabul edilebilmesi için, hemşirelerin bakım verdikleri bireyleri ve kendilerini etkileyen durumların kontrolünü ele almaları, özerk davranışlar sergilemeleri ve hemşirelik uygulamalarını bilimsel bilgiye dayandırmaları gerekmektedir. Bu makalenin temel amacı, hemşirelerin bilimsel bir disiplin olma yolunda profesyonel hemşireliğin vazgeçilmez unsurlarından biri olan özerkliğin önemine dikkatlerinin çekilmesi ve uygulama ortam- larında özerk davranışlar sergilemelerine katkı sağlayabilecek temel bilgi, anlayış ve kavramların ortaya konulmasıdır.
