Nephrology Nursing and Emotional Intelligence

Abstract

Emotional intelligence involves the abilities to be aware of emotions, to cope with emotions, to motivate oneself, to develop empathy and to manage relationships. Nephrology nurses with high emotional intelligence skills are able to communicate effectively, to be aware of feelings, to motivate themselves, to manage their feelings and to develop empathy. The primary goals of nephrology nursing should include increasing self-confidence of patients by developing empathy and ensuring that patients participate in decisions about their own lives. Developing empathy, a component of emotional intelligence, and increasing patients’ selfconfidence can be achieved by getting to know patients and establishing a proper and effective communication with them. It is essential that nephrology nurses possess higher levels of emotional intelligence than many other professionals so that they can effectively protect their patients’ lives. This review aims to inform nephrology nurses about the significance of emotional intelligence in nephrology nursing
