This article consists of an introduction and three sections. In the introduction, I attempted to
examine the sense and significance of the badā notion. In the first section, I tried to investigate
when and who put forward this notion. In the following section, I discussed its employment as a
proof in the Shiite imamate debates after it had undergone several transformations. In the final
section, I tried to analyze the efforts by the Imamite theologians to interpret this notion in line with
the doctrine of naskh (legal abrogation) in order to demonstrate that the badā is not one of the
bases upon which the Shiite Imamism is grounded.
