The Mechanisms of Persecution in Brodeck’s Report: A Sociological and Literary Reading

Abstract

This article analyses Philippe Claudel's Le Rapport de Brodeck, highlighting its historical, psychoanalytical, sociological and thematic dimensions The novel explores traumatic memory, collective guilt and social exclusion through the fate of Brodeck, a survivor of the Nazi camps rejected by a complicit and silent society. Claudel makes empathy a central tool, enabling readers to feel the protagonist's suffering and understand the mechanisms of persecution. He sets up a rich symbolic universe, notably with the figure of the labyrinth, reminiscent of the myth of the Minotaur, which refers to the hunting down and sacrifice of the Jews The Anderer, an enigmatic and marginal character, embodies a Christ-like figure: he is the bearer of truth and otherness before being sacrificed by the community. His fate illustrates the scapegoat mechanism and the mass psychology described by Freud, which highlights how ideology and fear lead to collective brutality. The novel is based on an immersive sensory narrative, in which olfaction plays a fundamental role in the reconstruction of the trauma. Claudel uses smells as memory triggers, reinforcing the emotional impact of the story and illustrating the persistence of the past in the present. Finally, Le Rapport de Brodeck goes beyond mere historical testimony to offer a universal reflection on the human condition. It highlights the ease with which humans give in to cruelty and oblivion, denouncing the banality of evil. Through introspective and symbolic writing, Claudel questions individual and collective responsibility in the face of history, inviting the reader to reflect on exclusion and memory.
