Abstract

Bu çalışmada çağdaş İngiliz tiyatrosunun önde gelen yazarlarından Mark Ravenhill’in Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat adlı oyununda günümüz Batı toplumlarını etkisi altında tutan korku kültürü incelenmektedir. Çalışmada Thomas Hobbes ve Niccolo Machiavelli’nin felsefeleri temel alınarak belirtilen oyunda korku ile toplum ve korku ile iktidar ilişkileri incelenmektedir. Bu düşünürlerin yanı sıra Frank Furedi, Lars Svendsen, Zygmunt Bauman ve Sara Ahmed gibi günümüz kuramcılarının fikirleri ışığında Batı toplumlarında ortaya çıktığı şekliyle korku kültürü ve etkileri ele alınmıştır. Ravenhill’in oyununda günümüz Batı toplumlarının, güvenlik anlayışlarını temelinden sarsan terör olayları sonucu, küresel ekonomi sisteminin ve iktidarların dayattığı her şeyi sorgusuz şekilde takip eden edilgen yapılarına dikkat çekilmektedir. Ayrıca korku kültürünün neden olduğu yabancılaşma, şiddet ve ötekileştirme temaları iktidar sorunsalı açısından tartışılmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı korkunun değişim ve gelişim sürecine de ışık tutarak bu duygunun günümüz toplumlarını nasıl etkisi altına aldığını ortaya koyabilmektir. Çalışma boyunca Ravenhill’in bakış açısından özellikle çağdaş Batı toplumunda ortaya çıktığı şekliyle korkuyu tanımlama ve oluşturduğu kültürü anlama çabamızın nedeni modern çağın ve toplumların doğasını anlamaya daha yakın olabilme düşüncesidir.

Culture of Fear in Mark Ravenhill’s Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat

Abstract

In this study, the culture of fear that has dominated contemporary Western societies is examined in Shoot/Get Treasure/Repeat by Mark Ravenhill, a leading playwright of the contemporary English theatre. In the study, the relationship between fear and society as well as fear and sovereignty is studied based on the philosophies of Thomas Hobbes and Niccolò Machiavelli. In addition, the culture of fear and its effects as they appear in the Western societies are studied in the light of the ideas of contemporary theorists such as Frank Furedi, Lars Svendsen, Zygmunt Bauman and Sara Ahmed. In Ravenhill’s play, attention is drawn to the passive status of today's Western societies that follow everything imposed by the global economic system and governments as a result of the terrorist events that undermine the sense of security. Furthermore, the themes of alienation, violence and othering caused by the culture of fear are discussed in terms of the question of power. The aim of this study is to reveal how fear affects contemporary societies by shedding light on the process of change and development of fear. Throughout the study, the reason for our efforts to define fear as understood in contemporary Western society and to understand the culture it creates from Ravenhill's point of view, is the idea of being closer to understanding the nature of modern age and societies.
