Abstract

Bibliometric Analysis of Studies on Fear of Crime

Year 2024, Volume: 41 Issue: 2, 642 - 658, 30.12.2024

Abstract

Fear of crime is one of the most important problems for societies as much as the crime itself. It is important to examine the causes and reflections of fear of crime in the context of the fact that it causes individuals to plan and restrict their daily life practices by taking into account the possibility of being a victim of crime. This study presents a bibliometric analysis of the studies on fear of crime by using the Web of Science (WoS) database, one of the most important sources of academic literature, and VOSviewer software, which creates maps for studies in the literature and provides bibliometric visuals. Crime is a problem that cannot be completely prevented. Since crimes are increasing in terms of methods and diversity, the continuity of research on fear of crime as a reflection of crime will remain important. Within the scope of the study, research on fear of crime was analyzed according to years, countries, most cited authors and studies, most frequently used keywords, and in which disciplines the authors conducted research. The findings show that more research on fear of crime was conducted especially in 2019, 2020, 2021; more research was conducted in the United States as a region; research with more than one author received more citations; keywords such as fear of crime, crime, victimization were repeated more frequently; and according to the disciplines, the researches were mostly under the umbrella of criminology/penology, psychology, and sociology. It is expected that the related analyses will contribute to those who will conduct research on fear of crime.
