Ecological Traces of Anatolian Civilizations

Abstract

Human beings by nature live together in communities. The Anatolian lands became one of the most appropriate area for the life model of the societies, which have been recognized as an important settlement and center of civilization. Its location, suitable climate, natural resources, the possibility of hosting the agriculture-livestock and being crossroads of trade routes were the most important reasons for this feature. Thus, throughout history, many states and civilizations have manifested themselves in this area and have been in the struggle for the continuity of this situation. Past events faced by these communities, their relationships with each other, social-economic status, culture and civilization are studied by the science of history with the cause-effect relationship. However, not as much as the current size, environmental issues starting since human existence are handled by expertise in the area of "Environmental History". This new perspective, unseen at first sight but illuminates on the key issues in the formation, development and extinction of culture and civilization in the light of environmental factors. This study, prepared from this point of view, aims to approach the history of major civilizations lived in Anatolia ecologically. Moreover, it aims to transfer the results and messages through historical window, of the remarkable determinations defined by this way. For this purpose, applications of important civilizations in different stages have been demonstrated by investigating in the historical document and sources. Significant and remarkable results emerging from the methodology followed have been compared in terms of the past and present dimensions. However, to draw attention to environmental issues experienced throughout history and ensure that it remains on the agenda are basic expectations.
