Prediction of Reinforcement Length for the Design of Geosynthetic-Reinforced Soil Retaining Wall

Abstract

The widespread design of the geosynthetic-reinforced soil retaining wall is based on limit equivalent approach and/or numerical computer models. In both approaches, the design initiates with the prediction of the required reinforcement length in the preliminary design stage. Many international guidelines on the design of uniform geosynthetic reinforced retaining walls suggest that the minimum reinforcement length in the preliminary design can be taken as %60-70 of the wall height. However, if more economical design is required or in the case of a necessity arises such that the existing of a rock formation or a heavily overconsolidated soil, or the existing of a support systems such as a nail wall or a previously constructed wall can be behind the designed wall, in these cases the most appropriate reinforcement length estimation becomes more of an issue. In this paper, the most appropriate reinforcement length is investigated by taking into account the wall deformations such as angular distortion, vertical and lateral deformation at the wall base. The wall height, the elastic moduli for soils, the geosynthetic reinforcement length, the internal friction angles of soils are taken into consideration as the input variables and the numerical analyses are performed to obtain the required data that are evaluated statistically afterwards and the most appropriate reinforcement length is determined using the considered variables . Paper presents the obtain results and discusses the most economical reinforcement length ranges that can be used in the preliminary design of the geosynthetic reinforced retaining walls by comparing the findings with the suggested values provided in some international guidelines.
