Evaluation of the Türkiye Century Education Model Based on the Views of Teachers of Religious Culture and Ethics

Abstract

This qualitative study examines the Türkiye Century Education Model (TCEM) and its subcomponent, the Religious Culture and Ethics (RCE) curriculum. It focuses on the updated curriculum based on implementation and the perspectives of fifth-grade RCE teachers, as well as the challenges they encounter during implementation. In particular, the study explores how teachers perceive the curriculum reform, the factors influencing its feasibility, and the structural factors that constrain the implementation of both the TCEM and the RCE curriculum across grades 4 to 8. The data were collected through in-depth interviews with fifth-grade RCE teachers in the Antalya province and analyzed using descriptive content analysis. Participating teachers were found to be receptive to the curriculum reform. However, structural challenges encountered in practice seemed to lead them to hold modest expectations about the curriculum’s capacity to achieve its intended objectives. Participants also noted that the effectiveness of the curriculum could be constrained by systemic factors, including impractical promotion and discipline regulations, overcrowded classrooms, parental disengagement, ideological debates concerning the curriculum, and limited opportunities for socialization for families and students. Overall, our findings suggest that the capacity of the curriculum should be evaluated not only in terms of its content but also in relation to the environmental and systemic factors.
