Determining Nurses' Attitudes Towards Cancer and Cancer Screenings

Abstract

Aim: This study was conducted to determine nurses' attitudes towards cancer and cancer screenings.
Material and Methods: The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 198 nurses working at a university. "Descriptive Information Form". "Questionnaire for Measuring Attitudes Toward Cancer (Cancer Stigma) " and "Attitude Scale for Cancer Screenings" were used to collect the data.
Results: The total mean score of the Nurses' Attitudes Towards Cancer (Cancer Stigma) Measurement Survey was 1.83±0.45. Among the sub-dimensions, the mean score of "Impossibility of Healing" was determined as 2.36±0.85, the mean score of "Discrimination" was 1.36±0.42, and the mean score of "Revealing the Cancer Diagnosis" was 1.53±0.51. The total mean score of the Attitude Scale Towards Cancer Screenings is 96.14±12.65. It was found that nurses' total scores of the Questionnaire for Measuring Attitudes Toward Cancer (Cancer Stigma) showed a significant difference according to their income level, professional experience, length of time working in their current positions and caring for cancer patients, and their total scores of the Attitude Scale for Cancer Screenings showed a significant difference according to their education level and having children (p <0.05 It was determined that there was a weak negative relationship (r=-0.273) between the total mean score of the Attitude Scale Towards Cancer Screenings and the Questionnaire for Measuring Attitudes Toward Cancer (Cancer Stigma) (p<0.05).
Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that nurses had positive attitudes towards cancer and cancer screenings and there were factors affecting their attitudes. Different studies examining nurses' attitudes towards cancer and cancer screenings should be conducted and the effectiveness of interventions aimed at their attitudes should be evaluated.

Hemşirelerin Kanser ve Kanser Taramalarına Yönelik Tutumlarının Belirlenmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışma, hemşirelerin, kanser ve kanser taramalarına yönelik tutumlarının belirlenmesi amacıyla yapılmıştır.
Gereç ve Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipteki araştırmanın örneklemini bir üniversite hastanesinde çalışan 198 hemşire oluşturmuştur. Verilerin toplanmasında “Tanıtıcı Bilgiler Formu”, “Kansere İlişkin Tutumları (Kanser Damgası) Ölçme Anketi” ve “Kanser Taramalarına Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği” kullanılmıştır.
Bulgular: Hemşirelerin; Kansere İlişkin Tutumları (Kanser Damgası) Ölçme Anketi toplam puan ortalaması 1.83±0.45; alt boyutlardan “İyileşmenin İmkansız Olması” alt boyut puan ortalaması 2.36±0.85, “Ayrımcılık” alt boyut puan ortalaması 1.36±0.42 ve “Kanser Tanısını Ortaya Çıkarma” alt boyut puan ortalaması 1.53±0.51 olarak belirlenmiştir. Kanser Taramalarına Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği toplam puan ortalaması ise 96.14±12.65’dir. Hemşirelerin Kansere İlişkin Tutumları (Kanser Damgası) Ölçme Anketi toplam puanlarının gelir düzeyi, mesleki deneyim süresi, şimdiki pozisyonlarında çalışma süresi ve kanser hastasına bakım verme durumlarına göre, Kanser Taramalarına Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği toplam puanlarının ise eğitim düzeyi ve çocuk sahibi olma durumlarına göre anlamlı farklılık gösterdiği saptanmıştır (p<0.05). Kanser Taramalarına Yönelik Tutum Ölçeği ile Kansere İlişkin Tutumları (Kanser Damgası) Ölçme Anketi toplam puan ortalamaları arasında negatif yönlü zayıf düzey bir ilişki (r=-0.273) olduğu belirlenmiştir (p<0.05).
Sonuç: Çalışmada, hemşirelerin kanser ve kanser taramalarına yönelik olumlu tutum içerisinde oldukları ve tutumlarını etkileyen faktörler olduğu belirlenmiştir. Hemşirelerin kanser ve kanser taramalarına yönelik tutumlarını inceleyen farklı çalışmalar yapılmalı ve tutumlarına yönelik müdahalelerin etkinlikleri değerlendirilmelidir.
