The purpose of this article is to open up a discussion by establishing a relationship between financial literacy and the governance mechanism. We discuss that the increase in the level of financial literacy can strengthen the governance mechanism. Within this context, a field research has been conducted in the public sector, one of the three legs of the governance mechanism. In this fieldwork, semi-structured interviews were carried out with experts and economists in public institutions related and/or authorized with financial literacy, working at the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Ministry of Trade, Central Bank, BRSA and CMBT. The research supports the thesis that increasing financial literacy levels can improve (1) transparency, (2) participation, (3) effective public administration and (4) accountability levels; thereby strengthening the governance mechanism.
