One of the most
significant problems of urban areas in Turkey is squatter housing and haphazard
building stock. This problem is not only
about unplanned growth, but it also threatens the safety of people and property
because of the disaster risks.
Therefore, the government enacted Transformation of Areas under Disaster
Risk Act No: 6306 in May 31, 2012 after the earthquake in Van in 2011. The law
initiated a more comprehensive urban transformation process than previous urban
transformation implementations. The level of information among the people, the
way it is perceived and weather it is supported by the general public are also
important issues. In this context, the effect of media on public opinion is
very important. Therefore, this paper includes the analysis of urban
transformation news in terms of ‘framing theory’. When the news published in newspapers with
high circulation within e period of one year were analyzed, it is understood
that the media handle the issue in a limited way and fails to reflect the
social and economic aspects of the issue that are concerning the addressees of
the law.
