Diarrhea Knowledge and Practices of 0-3 Years Old Mother
Abstract
Although diarrhea is the most frequently
observed disease in the world, it ranks the second in deaths of children under
5 years of age. For this reason, the study was conducted to evaluate the
knowledge and practices of the mothers of 0-3-year-old children with diarrhea.
The study was conducted on 138 women who
were the mothers of 0-3-year-old children. The participants were registered to
the Family Health Center 10, and lived in Aksaray City Center, Yunus Emre and
Cumhuriyet Districts. The data were collected with the Questionnaire Technique,
and were analyzed statistically.
It was observed that the
average age values of the mothers, who participated in the study, were
29,65±5,71 (min.19, max.54); and the average marriage age was 21,28±4,00
(min.15, max.35). Fifty-five point one percent of the mothers were Primary and
Secondary School graduates; and 19,5% were college graduates or had
post-graduate degrees. It was determined that 85,5% of the participants
perceived their income status as being middle-level and being at a good level.
It was determined that the mothers accepted more than 3 times aqueous
stool a day as diarrhea (73,2%). They knew that they should
use boiled water during diarrhea (81,9%); and they should give additional food
to their children (92,8%). It was also determined that the participant mothers
did not know that they should give salt-sugar packages during diarrhea (69,6%).
When the practices of the mother were investigated it was determined that the
participant mothers did not prepare the salt-sugar mixture on their own (71,7%);
and did not use ready salt-sugar packages (79,7%). It was observed that the
participant mothers did not give cow’s milk (76,8%); fatty foods (97,1%); tap
water (97,8%) and pulpy foods and fruits like
apricot (76,1%) to their children during diarrhea.
