Chromosome Analysis of Habitual Abortion Patients Retrospective Evaluation

Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to retrospectively evaluate both major chromosomal ab-normalities and polymorphisms in order to provide appropriate genetic counseling to couples admitted to our hospital with the diagnosis of Habitual Abortion. Materials and Methods: A total of 491 patients who applied to the Medical Genetics Outpatient Clinic due to recurrent pregnancy loss were included in our study. Chromosome analysis results of all patients were evaluated retrospectively. Results: In our study, 23 (4.6%) of a total of 491 individuals had polymorphism or one of the chro-mosomal abnormalities. Pericentric inversion was detected in 7 patients, reciprocal traslocation in 5 patients, increased heterochromatin region of Y chromosome in 5 patients, monosomy/trisomy in 1 patient, monosomy in 1 patient and numerical anomaly in 3 patients. The chromosome analy-sis results of the remaining 468 individuals were normal. Conclusions: In our retrospective review of couples with a history of habitual abortion, we empha-size that chromosome analysis results are an important step to elucidate the etiology. Our study may help to identify the causes of chromosomal abnormalities related to Habitual Abortion. It also clarifies the importance of chromosomal analysis to be informed about treatment options, especi-ally before resorting to assisted reproductive techniques.

Habitual Abortus Hastalarının Kromozom Analizlerinin Retrospektif Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, hastanemize Habitual Abortus tanısı ile başvuran çiftlere uygun genetik danışmanlık verebilmek için hem majör kromozom anomalilerinin hem de polimorfizmlerin retro-spektif olarak değerlendirilmesi amaçlanmıştır. Materyal ve metod: Çalışmamıza tekrarlayan gebelik kaybı nedeniyle Tıbbi Genetik Polikliniğine başvuran toplam 491 kişi dâhil edildi. Tüm hastaların kromozom analiz sonuçları retrospektif olarak değerlendirildi. Bulgular: Çalışmamızda toplam 491 hastanın 23’ünde (%4,6) bir kromozomal anomalisi tespit edil-miştir. 7 hastada perisentrik inversiyon, 5 hastada resiprokal traslokasyon, 5 kişide Y kromozomu-nun heterokromatin bölgesinde artış, 1 hastada monozomi/trizomi, 1 hastada monozomi ve 3 hastada sayısal anomali tespit edildi. 468 hastanın kromozom analizi sonuçları normal olarak değer-lendirildi. Sonuç: Habitual abortus öyküsü olan çiftlerde, kromozom analizi sonuçları etiyolojik nedenin açık-lanmasında önemlidir. Çalışmamız, kromozom anomalilerinin Habitual Abortus ile ilgili nedenleri belirlemeye yardımcı olabilir. Ayrıca, tedavi seçenekleri hakkında bilgi sahibi olmak, özellikle yar-dımcı üreme tekniklerine başvurmadan önce kromozom analizi önemine açıklık getirmektedir.
