The Relationship Between (2D:4D) Finger Ratios and Smoking, Social Media Addiction and Emotional Intelligence in Medical Students

Abstract

Background: This study aims to examine the correlation between the finger ratio (the ratio of the lengths of the 2nd and 4th fingers,2D:4D), believed to reflect prenatal testosterone levels, and smoking and social media addiction among medical students. The study also aimed to investigate the relationship between these factors and emotional intelligence.

Materials and Methods: The study comprised 70 non-smokers and 70 smokers, totalling 140 male students. The lengths of the second and fourth fingers of the students were measured. All participants were administered the Fagerstrom Test for Nicotine Dependence (FTND), the Social Media Addiction Scale-Adult Form (SMAS-AF), and the Schutte Emotional Intelligence Scale (SEIS).

Results: SMAS-AF is significantly weak positively correlated with R2D:4D (right 2nd and 4th fingers) (rho[140]) =0.266, p<0.001), L2D:4D (left 2nd and 4th fingers), (rho[140]) =0.187, p=0.027) and SEIS (rho[140]) =0.202, p=0.017). SEIS also shows a significant weak positive correlation with R2D:4D (rho[140]) =0.238, p=0.005). Only in the smoking group, the level of dependence was assessed with FTND and there was no correlation with R2D:4D, L2D:4D, Dr-I and other scale scores.

Conclusions: Our findings show that there is a significant relationship between 2D:4D finger ratio, social media addiction and emotional intelligence among male medical students. These results support the hypothesis that early hormonal influences may contribute to individual differences in both cognitive-emotional processing and susceptibility to behavioural addictions.
