Abstract

Background: The aim of our study was to investigate the effectiveness of video games-based exercise training in addition to conservative physiotherapy in terms of pain, functionality and joint position sense in patients with subacromial impingement syndrome.
Materials and Methods: We included patients with subacromial impingement syndrome between 40-65 years of age in Stage II and III classification according to Neer. Fifty patients included in our study were randomly divided into two groups. Conservative physiotherapy plus video games-based exercise training was applied to the first group (n=25), while only conservative physioterapy was applied to the second group (n=25). Both groups were treated for 20 sessions. Pre and post-treatment pain, range of motion, painful arc, muscle strength, joint position sense, and functionality were evaluated.
Results: In both groups, pain intensity and painful arc values were decreased, range of motion and muscle strength values were increased, joint position sense deviations decreased, functional level and quality of life were improved (p<0.05). There were no difference in terms of range of motion, muscle strength (flexion, extension, abduction, internal rotation, external rotation), painful arc, functionality scores (p>0.05). There were significant differences between groups in terms of pain, horizontal adduction muscle strength, joint position sense (p<0.05).
Conclusion: The results of our study showed that the video games-based exercise training plus conservative physiotherapy was more effective in terms of reducing pain, increasing joint position sense and increasing the level of functionality than only conservative physiotherapy. Therefore, we think that patients’ treatment should be supported by video games-based exercise training.

Subakromiyal Sıkışma Sendromunda Video Oyunları Tabanlı Egzersiz Eğitiminin Etkilerinin İncelenmesi

Year 2021, , 262 - 268, 27.08.2021
https://doi.org/10.35440/hutfd.860891
