Abstract

Abstract

Background: The suprameatal triangle is located on the lateral wall of the mastoid antrum, and this area is of great surgical importance. Therefore, in our study, we aimed to analyze the morphometric and topographic features of the suprameatal triangle, suprameatal crest and suprameatal depression in the skulls.
Materials and Methods: In our study, the borders and the area of the suprameatal triangle, the depth of the suprameatal depression, the types and dimensions of suprameatal spine in 66 temporal bones of 33 skulls of unknown age and gender were examined. Statistical analysis of the data obtained in our study was performed with SPSS v.20.0 software (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA). The relevance of the data for normal distribution was determined using The Shapiro-Wilk test.
Results: In our study, the most common type of suprameatal spine was as a crest form, and this rate was 54.5% on the right and 66.7% on the left. The depth of the suprameatal depression was observed as shallow (45.5%) on the right side, and equally (39.4%) on the left side both shallow and medium depth. The distribution of suprameatal spine dimensions was found to be equally small and medium (30.3%) on the right, and medium (45.5%) on the left.
Conclusions: We think that knowing the borders and morphological features of the suprameatal triangle well will be a guide for the prevention of possible complications.
