Evaluation of Ovarian and Uterine Pathological Lesions in Dogs Undergoing Ovariohysterectomy
Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the types, frequency, and distribution of pathological lesions observed in the ovarian and uterine tissues of female dogs subjected to ovariohysterectomy at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University. A total of 67 ovarian and uterine tissue samples obtained from bitches of different breeds and ages were examined. The samples were fixed in 10% formaldehyde, routinely processed, embedded in paraffin blocks, sectioned at 4-5 µm, and stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin for histopathological examination under a light microscope. Pathological lesions were detected in 23.88% of ovarian tissues. The most common ovarian lesions were follicular cysts (n=5; 7.46%) and luteal cysts (n=4; 5.97%), followed by paraovarian cysts (n=3; 4.48%) and polycystic ovaries (n=2; 2.98%). Oophoritis and ovarian remnant syndrome were each identified at a rate of (n=1;1.49%). In uterine tissues, pyometra was detected at a rate of (n=6; 8.95%), while pyometra associated with cystic endometrial hyperplasia was identified at a rate of (n=8; 11.94%). Metritis and serosal cysts were observed at a rate of (n=1; 1.49%). These findings indicate that reproductive pathological lesions, including clinically unapparent lesions, may be present at a considerable rate in ovariohysterectomy materials. Histopathological examination plays a crucial role in detecting clinically unapparent lesions and contributes significantly to the evaluation of reproductive health.
