The Effect of Flunixin Meglumine Administration Followed by Ovsynch Protocol on Pregnancy Rate in Dairy Cows
Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of flunixin meglumine administration following synchronization
of ovulation (ovsynch) on pregnancy rates in dairy cows. In the study, a total of 55 dairy cows were treated with ovsynch
protocol (10 μg GnRH on day 0, 500 μg PGF2α on day 7 and 10 μg GnRH on day 9) and artificial insemination was performed
16 h after the second GnRH. Cows were randomly divided into two groups after insemination. The treatment group were
injected twice with flunixine meglumine (1.1 mg/kg, IM), given 12 h apart on the evening of the day 13 and the morning of
the day 14 after insemination whereas the control group remained untreated. Pregnancy diagnosis was determined at 35th
day after artificial insemination by transrectal ultrasonography. Pregnancy rates were determined as 53.84% and 65.51%
for the control and treatment groups, respectively. In conclusion, there is no available statistical difference between
pregnancy rates (P> 0.05), despite the high pregnancy rate in the treatment group than in the control group were found.
