Effect of Flunixin Meglumine, Meloxicam and PGE2 Administrations After Insemination on Pregnancy Rates in Cows

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Flunixin meglumin (FM), Meloxicam (ML) and PGE2, which their luteotrophic and luteoprotectan, on pregnancy rates after artificial insemination in cows. The animal material of the study consisted of 97 cyclic Holstein Friesian cows, which were at least in the 45th day of postpartum, calved at least once and determined as healthy in reproductive examinations. PRID was inserted to all animals and removed 12 days after insertion. Five ml PGF2α injected intramuscularly just before the removal of PRID. Artificial inseminations (AI) were performed by an experienced veterinarian 72. hours after PGF2α injection. Cows were randomly divided into 4 groups, which were arranged as 0.2 mg/kg s.c. meloxicam injected (ML, n=29), 1.1 mg/kg i.m flunixin meglumin injected (FM, n=28), 2.5 mg intravaginal Dinoproston inserted (PGE2, n=20), 10 ml i.m Placebo (%0.9 NaCl) injected (Control, n=20) groups. All administrations were performed 15 days after AI and pregnancies were evaluated by ultrasonography on 45th day post insemination. According to results, pregnancy rates were; 58.62% (17 pregnant, 12 non-pregnant), 42.85% (12 pregnant, 16 non-pregnant), 45% (9 pregnant, 11 non-pregnant), 45% (9 pregnant, 11 non-pregnant) in ML, FM, PGE2 and Control groups, respectively. Higher pregnancy rates were achieved in the meloxicam treated cows, whereas similar results were obtained in the cows, which were treated by FM and PGE2, with the placebo group.
