Effect of Exercise on Lipid Profile in Arabian Horses
Abstract
Arabian is one of the main breeds of hot blooded horses. In Turkey Sanliurfa province holds a distinctive place in
among the other places where these breeds are raised. In general Arabian horse takes part in races at the age of two. Good
management conditions and feeding horses with balanced diet is critical in this period. There are so few investigations
related with blood clinical chemistry parameters of horses in Turkey in particular the horses raised in Sanliurfa region. In
our study it is aimed to investigate the effect of feeding on blood lipid profile. The samples of horses that raised in private
enterprises were compared in terms of feeding with traditional measures and concentrated diet. Feed composition did not
alter lipid profile in either group. In exercise group’s trigilserid increased (P≤ 0.05), total cholesterol (P≤ 0.05) and HDLcholesterol
(P< 0.05) values decreased and VLDL-cholesterol ve HDL-cholesterol values were within reference ranges.
Exercise has an impact on biochemical values but these results were also within reference ranges.
