Şanlıurfa’da Safkan Arap Atlarında Borrelia burgdorferi Seropozitifliğinin Belirlenmesi

Abstract

Determination of Borrelia burgdorferi Seropositivty in Arabian Thoroughbred Horses in Sanliurfa

Year 2019, , 221 - 224, 25.12.2019
https://doi.org/10.31196/huvfd.667768

Abstract

Lyme Borreliosis or Lyme disease is a zoonotic disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi. The transport of the disease is by the Ixodesticks. The disease affects various organs and systems of humans and domesticated animals (horses, cattle, dogs, cats, sheep, etc.). Veterinarians generally misdiagnose the disease because Lymeborreliosis imitates many diseases clinically. Due to difficulties in culturing of the agent, serological methods such as ELISA and IFAT are widely used for diagnosis of the disease. In this study, it was aimed to determine the seropositivity of Lyme Borreliosis in healthy thoroughbred Arabian horses in Sanliurfa. For this aim, between Autumn 2016 and Spring 2017, 186 serum samples were taken from randomly chosen pedigree purebred Arabian horses owned by the local people. Anti-Borrelia burgdorferi IgG antibodies were investigated by a commercial ELISA kit. Of 186 serum samples examined, 11 (5.9%) were found as positive, and three (1.6%) serum samples were found as doubtful. The rest of the serum samples (172, 92.5%) were found to be negative. This study is the first reporting the presence of anti-B. burgdorferi antibodies in Sanliurfa province. Due to both economic losses caused by the agent and zoonosis character of the disease, veterinarians should not ignore Lyme Borreliosis in their clinical studies. In additon, necessary preventive measures should be taken against the disease, and further studies should be conducted to search the current status of the disease in different animal species in the region
