Boy uzunluğu ve kanser ilişkisi

Abstract

İnsülin benzeri büyüme faktörü (IGF) sistemi, IGF-1, IGF-2 ligandları, membran reseptörleri ve bağlanma proteinlerinden (IGFBP) oluşan önemli biyolojik mekanizmalardan biridir. İnsülin benzeri büyüme faktörü sistemi, birçok spesifik hücrede büyümeyi sağlar. Büyüme hormonunun (GH) biyolojik etkileri olan postnatal gelişim ve longitudinal büyüme, GH stimülasyonu ile karaciğerden sentezlenen IGF-1 üzerinden gerçekleşir. IGF-1, kemik ve iskelet kasında da sentezlenen bir peptiddir. Bu etkisiyle boy uzamasında rol oynar. İnsülin benzeri büyüme faktörü sistemi aynı zamanda hücresel döngüde hücre proliferasyonunu ilerletir, regüle eder ve apoptozisi inhibe eder. Tüm bu etkiler hücresel döngüde mutasyona uğramış hücrelerin devamlı bölünmesine olanak sağlayarak kanser oluşumuna yol açar. Genom çapındaki bu bağlantılar boy ve kanser arasındaki ilişkinin ortaya çıkmasına olanak sağlamıştır. Yapılan bazı araştırmalarda birçok kanser türü ile boy uzunluğu arasında anlamlı pozitif ilişki görülür iken, bazı çalışmalarda ise bu sonuç elde edilememiştir.
