The Yapraklı funfair is an old funfair that was established in Yapraklı District of Çankırı. During the period when the funfair was established, Yapraklı became an important space where products from Anatolia and countries such as Egypt, Iran and Syria were merchandised. Entertainments and contests were organized at the funfair besides a variety of cultural activities. Additionally, the Yapraklı funfair became one of the centers where minstrels used to pursue their art. The funfair which used to be established for commercial purposes in the beginning, witnessed cultural exchange and became a literary locality for minstrels afterwards. The Ukaz funfair which provided noteworthy developments in the social and cultural lives of the Arabs heightened commerce, entertainment and contests. Poem reading contests became effective on the development of the Arabic literature. The poems which were liked at the contests were hung on the walls of the Ka’bah and the winners were granted various awards. The Yapraklı funfair where minstrels used to display their art in the minstrelsy tradition is similar to the Ukaz funfair which played a major role in the development of the Arabic literature. Just as a poet of a tribe in Ukaz providing fame to himself and his tribe through calls-and-responses, the poets in Yapraklı who solved a mystery and proved themselves in calls-and-responses provided fame. Both funfairs have similarities in terms of the time and space where they were established and their contributions to their own literature. In this study, the social and cultural characteristics of Yapraklı and 'Ukaz fairs were discussed and their place in Turkish and Arab culture was revealed. In addition, Yapraklı and 'Ukaz fairs were compared from various perspectives and their common points were determined their common grounds.
