Abstract
The aim of this study is to shed light on the demographic structure of Şırnak based on the data of the general population censuses conducted between 1927-1950, which symbolises the Single Party Period in Republican Turkey. For this purpose, the demographic data and results of the first census conducted in Turkey in 1927 and the general censuses conducted at five-year intervals since 1935 have been comprehensively classified and evaluated with the unique dynamics of Şırnak. Since the article is based on the data of 5 different censuses between 1927-1950, quantitative method is used in the study. The charts containing Şırnak data have been reinterpreted especially in terms of local settlements. Based on this method, the total population of Şırnak, which was determined as a result of the censuses conducted in 1927, 1935, 1940, 1945 and 1950, was analysed in terms of characteristics such as language, religion, gender, peasant-urban distribution and literacy. Official Population Statistics published by the State Institute of Statistics (SIS) and documents from the Prime Ministry Republican Archives (BCA) are the primary sources used in the article. The main findings of the article cover the specific characteristics of the population of Şırnak between 1927 and 1950.
