Identity and Cultural Memory Construction in Family-Based Tourism: A Conceptual Approach in the Context of the 2025 Year of the Family

Abstract

The declaration of 2025 as the “Year of the Family” has created a significant opportunity to reassess the multifaceted role of the family in social structures. This study conceptualizes family-based tourism not merely as a leisure activity but as a sociocultural practice that facilitates the construction of cultural memory, identity transmission, and intergenerational interaction. From a social sustainability perspective, family tourism extends beyond individual satisfaction, contributing to social cohesion, historical awareness, and emotional bonding among generations. The main aim of this study is to position tourism as a multidimensional learning process that nourishes and reproduces cultural memory while shaping individual and collective identity. Drawing on Halbwachs’ theory of collective memory, Kolb’s experiential learning model, and McAdams’ narrative identity theory, an original conceptual model is developed, focusing on the spatial, narrative, and emotional dimensions of family experiences. Based on an integrative literature review and conceptual modeling techniques, the study reveals the transformative role of family tourism in sustaining cultural heritage, reinforcing historical consciousness, and rebuilding emotional ties. It concludes that family-based tourism contributes not only economically but also socially and culturally to sustainable development and suggests that the proposed framework should be supported by future empirical research.

Aile Temelli Turizmde Kimlik ve Kültürel Bellek İnşası: 2025 Aile Yılı Bağlamında Kavramsal Bir Yaklaşım

Year 2025, Issue: Aile Özel Sayısı, 141 - 160, 30.09.2025
https://doi.org/10.33709/ictimaiyat.1743398
