Çevrim İçi Radikal Feminizm ve Mizojini Bağlamında Güney Kore Örneği

Abstract

Online Radical Feminism and Misogyny: The Case of South Korea

Year 2025, Volume: 9 Issue: 2, 256 - 273
https://doi.org/10.33709/ictimaiyat.1692193

Abstract

With the rise of social media platforms, and online applications, radical feminist movements have emerged in South Korea's virtual realm. Online radical feminist movements may be seen as a result of increasing misogyny (hatred of women). This study evaluates the South Korean example in the context of online radical feminism and misogyny. The focus of this study is on how online and offline misogyny affect feminist movements, the stance of feminists against increasing misogyny, and the causes of misogyny. Despite its relatively developed economy and democratic structure, South Korea ranks high among OECD countries in terms of gender pay gap. This study provides a theoretical background and then discusses the radical feminist movements that have been influential in the country in recent years, their goals, and the methods they use. The Gangnam murder, which gave momentum to these movements and made hate crimes against women a reality, and its impact on feminist movements are evaluated. In this context, online misogyny is examined along with its causes, and examples of DC Inside and Ilbe, which target women in the virtual world, are discussed. What makes this study unique is that it addresses both sides of the coin, covering both male- and female-hating movements and evaluating the conditions under which they emerged. As a result, Korean feminist movements that organized online and then moved offline have provided women with solidarity, a space for action, and opportunities for protest, but it is unclear how long they will remain radical.
