Abstract

Kentte yaşayanların sosyal,
kültürel ve ekonomik yaşama bağlı olarak kentsel mekânda tanımladığı değerler,
semboller ve işlevler kentin kültürel kimliğine dair referanslar taşımaktadır.
Bu bağlamda, kentlinin yaşadığı çevreye yönelik edindiği duygular, inançlar ve
anılar ile birlikte çevreyi tanımlama biçimi o kentin kültürel kimliğinin
tamamlayıcı parçasını oluşturmaktadır. Bu nedenle tarihi kentsel çevrelerin
kimliğinin belirlenmesinde sadece fiziksel nitelikler yeterli olmamaktadır.
Fiziksel niteliklerle birlikte kullanıcılar tarafından kentsel mekâna yüklenen
anlam ve kullanım biçimlerinin de değerlendirilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu makale,
tarihi çevrelerin korunmasında sosyal, kültürel ve fiziksel niteliklerin
birlikteliği ile oluşan yerel kültürel kimliğin korunmasının önemini açıklamayı
amaçlamaktadır. Bu kapsamda, çağdaş koruma yaklaşımları çerçevesinde tarihi
kentsel çevrenin korunmasında yerel kimliğin önemi vurgulanmakta, kentsel
ölçekte yerin kimliğinin korunmasındaki temel sorunlar ve çözüm önerileri
tespit etme, koruma ve aktarma başlıkları altında irdelenmektedir. İrdelenen
konular, çağdaş koruma yaklaşımlarının yansıtıldığı Québec tarihi kent
merkezinde yazarların yapmış olduğu alan tespit çalışmasıyla örneklenmektedir.

Spatial Presentation of Local Identity and Its Conservation in Québec City

Abstract

The values, symbols and
functions, which are attributed by local people to urban spaces through their
social, cultural and economic backgrounds, give
references about the cultural identity of a historic urban context. Hence,
citizens’ way of defining their living environment base on their feelings,
beliefs and memories is a complementary part of cultural identity of a historic
area. Therefore, the physical formation is not enough in setting the identity
of historic urban contexts, the meanings and functions attributed by users
should also be considered in conservation decisions. This
article aims to explain the importance of protection of cultural identity,
which is evidently formed by the integration of social, cultural and physical
aspects of a historic urban context. In this sense, the importance of local
identity in conservation of a place is emphasized in accordance with
contemporary conservation approaches, the basic problems and solution proposals
for protection of local identity in urban context are
explicated under the topics of identification, protection and presentation.
These subjects are investigated in the historic centre of Quebec City which is the paramount sample of
conservation of local identity.
