TÜRKİYE’DE ALGISAL SAPMALAR

Abstract

Günümüzde artık insanların karar verirken her zaman optimizasyon yapan rasyonel bireyler (homo economicus) gibi davranmadıkları kabul edilmektedir. Buna rağmen, davranışlar rasyonel olmasa veya gözükmese bile onları anlayıp, modelleyebilmek çok büyük önem taşır. Önceleri nispeten küçük bir topluluk tarafından (daha ziyade psikoloji alanında çalışan bir kesim) incelenen algısal sapmalar (cognitive biases) 1974 yılında Science dergisinde yayınlanan bir makaleyle Tversky ve Kahneman tarafından daha geniş kitlelere tanıtıldı. Günümüzde, egemen görüş olmamakla birlikte, bazı davranışsal modeller Ekonomi ve Finans alanlarına yavaş yavaş nüfuz ederek literatürde kendilerine daha geniş yer edinmektedir. Ülkemizde bu tür algısal sapmalar üzerine yapılmış kısıtlı sayıda çalışma olduğu için bu çalışmamızda literatürde yaygın olarak rastlanan ve bu çalışmada ele alınan bazı algısal sapmaların (çıpalama, referans noktaları, yanlı olasılık değerlendirme ve risk eğilimleri) gelişmekte olan ve değişken bir ortam olan Türkiye’de de varlığını araştırmak istedik. Çalışmamızda kullandığımız veri anket yöntemiyle toplandı. Kullandığımız ankette literatürdeki ölçeklerden yararlanarak sorular oluşturuldu ve üniversite öğrencilerinden başlayıp çalışanlara ve emeklilere kadar uzanan geniş bir yelpazeye uygulandı. Bu geniş kapsamlı anketin sonuçları analiz edildiğinde katılımcıların anlamlı oranda basit çıpalama algısal yanılgısı göstermediği, fakat referans noktası etkisinin güvenli bir alternatifin varlığı ile mevcut seçeneği teşvik edici olduğu, yanlı olasılık değerlendirme algısal sapmasının kumarbaz yanılgısı yönünde ağır bastığı ve risk eğiliminin bireysel kararlar üzerinde oldukça etkili olduğu bulunmuştur

COGNITIVE BIASES IN TURKEY

Abstract

It has become widely accepted that people do not always behave like the rational, optimizing individuals of traditional theories (homo economicus) when making decisions. Despite the actions not being (or at least not seeming to be) rational, it is still important to be able to try to understand and model them. Cognitive biases were originally of interest to a relatively small group (mostly working in the area of psychology), however, they were introduced to a wider audience with the appearance of Tversky and Kahneman’s article in Science in 1974. Over time, despite not becoming the dominant views, behavioral models have made a place for themselves in the Finance and Economics literature. As there have only been a limited number of studies on this subject in Turkey, in this study we will examine the presence of some cognitive biases (anchoring, reference point, probability judgment and risk propensity) in Turkey that are commonly found in the literature in other countries. We collected our data using a survey that was developed by using information about measures used in other surveys in the literature. Our sample includes a large number of participants from a wide range, beginning from students to current employees to retired individuals. The results lend support to the presence of reference point, probability judgment and risk propensity cognitive biases. However, we fail to find evidence supporting anchoring
