Abstract
This research aims to determine the relationship between the problematic Internet use of conservatory students and their academic success. The study group of the research consists of 130 students studying at the Zonguldak Bülent Ecevit University State Conservatory in the 2021-2022 academic year. “The Problematic Internet Use Scale” developed by Ceyhan et al. (2007) was used to collect the research data. The scale consists of 33 items and 3 sub-dimensions: negative consequences of the Internet, social benefit/social comfort, and excessive usage. Ceyhan et al. (2007) found the internal consistency coefficient (α) of the scale to be 0.94, and the item total score reliability coefficients to be between 0.31 and 0.70 (p<.001). The demographic information of the participants was collected through the form prepared by the researcher. The academic success scores of the participants were obtained through official correspondence. The data obtained in the research were analyzed using the SPSS21 program. In the analysis of the data, the normality distribution of the data was examined and t-test, ANOVA, Tukey, correlation, and regression analysis tests were used. As a result of the research, it was seen that the sub-dimensions of problematic Internet use were predictors of the academic success of conservatory students and could explain 74.2% of their academic success. In addition, gender, class, and age had a significant effect on problematic Internet use, while the branch variable didn’t have a significant effect.
