Idris Muhtefi and Wahdat al-Wujud

Abstract

The diverse intellectual output and spiritual dynamism of Sufi orders during the Ottoman period aimed to illuminate profound metaphysical subjects, inspire contemplation, and guide seekers along the spiritual path. This study focuses on the inner unity expressed by a Melami sheikh within the conceptual framework of Wahdat al-Wujud, based on the poetry of Idris Mukhtafi, a mysterious figure associated with the Bayrami-Melami tradition of the Ottoman era. In this context, a well-known fifteen-couplet poem that reflects the metaphysical views of Idris Mukhtafi is examined in detail. The study explores the key spiritual concepts alluded to in the poem, their connection with Wahdat al-Wujud, and how these themes contribute to the embodiment of symbolic language in the spiritual life of the wayfarer. Particular attention is given to the transformative function of symbols and metaphors, which have long served as universal tools of human expression. Symbolism plays a central role in Sufi literature, where poems and discourses marked by intense metaphorical language are often referred to as satahat. Though such expressions may appear to arise from spiritual ecstasy or enthusiasm, close analysis reveals that they are underpinned by coherent theological insights and well-grounded metaphysical principles. Through a combination of textual analysis and literature review, this study reveals the symbolic structures and conceptual foundations embedded in the verses of Idris Mukhtafi and elucidates their relationship to the doctrine of Wahdat al-Wujud. Ultimately, the study offers a deeper understanding of the Melami path as a spiritual orientation rooted in inward unity, symbolic insight, and the existential search for divine truth.
