UMAYYAD HAJJ/PİLGRİMAGE ORDERS AND PRACTİCES OF THE MARWĀNİDS PERİOD
Abstract
The existence of the Kaʿba and its knowledge in the Arabian Peninsula as a center of worship dates back to very old times. Pre-Islamic Arab societies took care to fulfill their individual and social worship needs and practices in the Kaʿba, which was accepted as a harem. At the beginning of these worships was the pilgrimage. Because the Arabs, believe that Hajj worship it was established to the Prophet by İbrahim. Although it has undergone some change both faithfully and formally over time, the place and value of the pilgrimage has never been lost in the Arabs of Jahiliyya. Islam also established pilgrimage as an obligation of worship and made it obligatory after the conquest of Mecca. To fulfill the obligations of this new worship, which is adorned with some individual and social characteristics, as the first pilgrimage order to was appointed (Hz.) Abu Bakr. A year later, the Prophet fulfilled this duty. Until came to the Umayyads, the rashid caliphs and the people they assigned among the companions, they fulfilled the pilgrimage emirate. Umayyads, on the other hand, beside their holiness in order to eliminate some of the problems they have with the Islamic community and to facilitate some of their savings about the future they tried to take advantage of the social power of the pilgrimage emirate. For this reason, they have always taken care to choose their pilgrimage orders from their own tribe members. It is possible to see this situation in both the Sufyanids and Marwanids periods. In this study, we evaluated that in the Marwanids period together with the pilgrimage emirate and practices of ʿAbdallāh b. al-Zubayr, Marwani Hajj orders and practices are examined. Sixty-eight years of pilgrimage orders, which we have identified from four different sources it has been tried to make it understandable by showing in tables. With emphasis on alliance and disputed Hajj orders important services and practices related to Haremeyn, if any, were touched upon.
