The Relationship between Mentoring Functions Received and Psychological Empowerment: The Role of Trust and Political Skill
Abstract
There are studies
focusing on mentoring functions received and its motivational outcomes, but
most of these studies fail to show how and when mentoring relates to these
outcomes. In order to fulfill this gap, we investigated the mediating effect of
trust in mentor and the moderating role of political skill of the mentor on the
relationship between mentoring functions received and psychological
empowerment. We collected data from 164 employees who work in public and
private organizations in Kazakhstan, and conducted a moderated mediation
analysis. Based on the findings, protégés feel psychologically empowered as
mentoring functions received instilled trust in mentor. However, it was also
revealed that the relationship between mentoring functions received and
psychological empowerment was stronger only when the mentor was perceived to
have high political skill. Based on these findings, theoretical and practical
implications were discussed.
