Side-Bet Theory in Organizational Commitment: A Field Study on “Examining The Diffrences Between Side-Bets and Employees’ Demographic Characteristics”

Abstract

Nowadays, firms become much more similar in terms of structure, technological and physical characteristics and as a result, the importance of human resources and retention of employees have increased. In order to maintain employee continuity, some steps had been taken and as one of these steps, organizatonal commitment, has come into prominence specifically. Up to date, commitment has been researched with different dimensions and point of views. As a result, a variety of ambiguities has occurred. Despite these ambiguities and different point of views, gaining employees’ commitment is still a common aim and problem of all organizations. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the relationship between demographic characteristics and commitment levels of military personnel with the light of “Side-Bet Theory”, which was come up with Howard Becker in 1960. Within this scope, Side-Bet Scale (Shore et al., 2000) was conducted on 92 military personnel serving to International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) on Multinational Airport in Kabul/Afghanistan. As a result of analyses, it is determined that military personnel’s’ commitment levels differ significantly according to their demographic characteristics.

Örgütsel Bağlılıkta Yan Bahisler Yaklaşımı: İşgörenlerin Demografik Özellikleri ile Yan Bahisler Arasındaki Farklılığı Belirlemeye Yönelik Bir Araştırma

Abstract

Günümüzde örgütlerin yapısal, teknolojik v.d. fiziksel özelliklerinin benzer hale gelmesi, insan kaynaklarının önemini ve devamlılığını giderek artırmış ve işgören devamlılığını sağlamak adına çeşitli adımlar atılmıştır. Bu adımlardan biri de örgütsel bağlılık gibi kavramların ön plana çıkması olmuştur. Sosyal bilimciler tarafından bu devamlılığı sağlayacak en önemli nosyon olan bağlılık farklı boyutlarda ve bakış açılarında ele alınmış; bunun sonucunda da çeşitli anlam kargaşaları ortaya çıkmıştır. Farklı bakış açılarına rağmen ortak amaç olan örgütsel bağlılığın sağlanmasına işletmeler var güçleriyle çalışmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı Howard Becker tarafından 1960 yılında öne sürülen yan bahisler yaklaşımı ışığı altında çalışanların kurumlarına karşı duydukları bağlılıkları alt boyutlarıyla birlikte ele alarak demografik özellikleriyle olan ilişkilerini ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma kapsamında North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) çatısı altında International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) bünyesinde Kabil/Afganistan Çok Uluslu Havaalanı’nda görev yapan askeri personelin yan bahisler yaklaşımı olarak da bilinen bağlılık düzeyleri incelenmiştir. Shore ve arkadaşları (2000) tarafından hazırlanan ölçek, 92 askeri personel uygulanmış; analizler sonucunda personelin bağlılık düzeyleri ile demografik özellikleri arasında çeşitli boyutlarda anlamlı farklılıklar olduğu tespit edilmiştir.
