The Effects of Different Substrates on Growth and Yield of Pleurotus eryngii Mushroom

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine the effects of different substrates on spawn run time, days to first harvest, yield and biological efficiency of Pleurotus eryngii mushroom. In the study, total of 12 different substrates were investigated. Wheat straw (WS), corn stalk (CS), poplar sawdust (PS) and Ferula communis plant waste (FPW) were used alone or 20% wheat bran (WB) or rice bran (RB) were added to these substrates. The pH, moisture, ash, carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content and C:N ratio of substrates were detected. In addition to, spawn run time, days to first harvest, yield and biological efficiency rate in the different substrates were determined. As a result, the longest spawn run time and days to first harvest were observed in the WS+RB substrate (respectively, 36.6 day and 70.2 day), while the shortest spawn run time and days to first harvest were determined in the CS substrate (respectively, 13.6 day and 41.0 day). The highest yield and biological efficiency (respectively, 24.4 g 100g-1 substrate and 81.33%) were obtained from the CS substrate. Conversely, the lowest yield and biological efficiency were found in the WS+RB, PS and WS substrates, respectively. The results revealed that the FPW which is abundant and easily available in the Eastern Anatolia Region could be used as substrate both alone and mixing with WB or RB in P. eryngii cultivation.
