The Use of Corn Silage as Additive Substance in The Cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus

Abstract

This study was conducted to determine theutilization status of corn silage as additive substance in the cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus mushroom. In the study, substrates prepared by the addition of corn silage in the different ratios (5, 10, 15 and 20%) to wheat straw were compared with control (95% wheat straw +5% wheat bran) in terms of yield and morphological properties. The pH, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), C:N ratio and mineral matter (K, P, Mg, Zn, Fe and Mn) contents of the materials used in the preparation of the substrates and substrates after sterilization were determined. The difference among control and substrates prepared by the addition of corn silage in the different ratios was found statistically significant (P<0.05) in terms of yield and non-significant in terms of morphological properties (cap length, stipe length and stipe thickness). The highest yield (220.13 g kg-1 substrate) was obtained from the substrate prepared by the addition of corn silage in the rate of 10% to wheat straw and the lowest yield (153.75 g kg-1 substrate) was observed in the control substrate. It was concluded that corn silage can be used as a good and cheap additive substance alternative to wheat bran in the cultivation of P. ostreatus mushroom.
