The Analysis of Beekeeping in Salıpazarı District of Samsun and Relationship of Beekeeper-Association
Abstract
This study examines the socio-economic and production structure of beekeepers and relationship of beekeeper-association in Salıpazarı district of Samsun. The research data were collected from 30 beekeepers determined by systematic sampling method through questionnaire forms considering the 2014-2015 production year and field observations. Socio-economic structure of beekeepers was revealed using classical economic analysis. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Research results showed that beekeepers prefer beekeeping as additional income, short-distance migratory or stationary beekeepers. The beekeepers who were 52 years old on average had 15 years of experience and 8 years of schooling. Research results also showed that the mean number of colonies for the beekeepers was 90 and honey yield per colony in district was 15 kg in the district. Races of honey bee that cannot adapt to local conditions are shown as the most important reason for declining yields in recent years. 93% of the beekeepers stated that they struggled with Varroa destructor. Extracted flower honey is sold at 25-50 TL kg-1 in the district while chestnut honey is sold at 55-90 TL kg-1. 80% of the beekeepers were satisfied from the association activities. Young people should be encouraged for beekeeping through the beekeeping departments to be opened in vocational schools and the new generation should be ensured to internalize beekeeping by reducing the average age of beekeepers. Integrated pest control is necessary in fight against Varroa destructor. Reducing the existing incorrect practices in beekeeping in districts and in the country can be contributed by including applicable subjects such as marketing, queen bee breeding, bee diseases and treatments in the trainings to be held.
