Investigation of Socio-Economic Characteristics and Cooperative-Partner Relationships of Cooperative Partners Engaged In Dairy Cattle in Aksaray Province

Abstract

For the development of livestock breeding which is of great importance in the agricultural sector, producers must be organized and this structure should function effectively. In this context, it is very important to examine and investigate the working type of livestock. Aksaray province ranks first in the T71 region, with 190 thousand bovine animals and 331.823 tons year-1 milk production. In this study, it is aimed to investigate the socio-economic characteristics of the cooperative partner farmers of Hay-Koop and Tar-Koop regional unions and their relationship with the cooperative. For this purpose, in 2016-2017, 90 enterprises, which are members of Hay-Koop or Tar-Koop member cooperatives and engaged in dairy cattle breeding, were determined by stratified sampling method and a face-to-face survey was conducted. The chi-square independence test was used to determine the existence of a statistical relationship between the specific characteristics of the enterprises and the cooperatives according to the status of the parent association of the cooperative. According to the results, the majority of the operators (62.2%) were primary school graduates and 63.3% of the enterprises were only dairy cattle enterprises. While 77.1% of Hay-Koop member cooperative partners were only engaged in dairy cattle farming, 52.4% of Tar-Koop member cooperative partner enterprises were also engaged in fattening together with dairy cattle breeding. It was found to be statistically significant (P<0.05). Besides, nearly all of them deliver their milk to the cooperatives. 55.5% of all cooperative partners stated that product marketing should be a priority for cooperatives and 66.7% stated that the cooperative profit should be used by making new investments.
