Some Fruit Properties of Cornelian Cherry Genotypes Selected in North Region of Vezirköprü (Samsun) District

Abstract

The study was carried out to select cornelian cherry (Cornus mas L.) genotypes with superior fruit characteristics naturally grown in north region of Vezirköprü (Samsun) district. 70 cornelian cherry genotypes were investigated during 2015 and 2016 years and among those 13 genotypes were selected using ‘weight ranked method’ based on fruit weight, flesh/stone ratio, total soluble solids and vitamin C characteristics. In genotypes selected, fruit weight, flesh/stone ratio, stone weight, pH value, total soluble solids content, titratable acidity content and vitamin C were varied from 1.90 g (K-10) to 4.25 g (K-12), 4.08 (K-8) to 7.33 (K-12), 0.30 g (K-7) to 0.56 g (K-13), 2.58 (K-9) to 3.63 (K-13), 9.80% (K-8) to 13.60% (K-9) and 24.45 mg 100 g-1 (K-9) to 76.05 mg 100 g-1 (K-3), respectively. There was a great variation with respect to the investigated properties and as a result of the performed classification K-2 and K-12 genotypes were considered promising. We can conclude that these genotypes could be a valuable source for future breeding studies. Besides, propagating and then investigating these selected genotypes under similar conditions would provide more objective results.
