Integration of Lean Principles in Hotel Management into 14001:2015 Environmental Management System

Abstract

ISO 14001 specifies the requirements for creating an environmental management system. These requirements are significant because they serve as a model for how the system is managed and the organization is structured to be environmentally friendly. According to many studies in the literature, in order to improve environmental performance, strategies such as ISO 14001, waste management, reuse, and reprocessing should be integrated and supported by other systematic process improvement approaches such as lean management. Many empirical studies have shown that lean management principles and tools improve environmental management. This study aims at presenting a conceptual model for the integration of lean principles and ISO14001 environmental management requirements that can be used to assess and enhance environmental performance, one of the most crucial indicators of the tourism industry. The study focused on the processes unique to hotel management, and defined the main concepts, principles, tools and performance indicators that came out with the integrated model for these processes. The proposed model is anticipated to help increase the visibility of the environmental performance of hotel businesses in the tourism industry. According to the author's knowledge, this is the first study to assess how lean principles and ISO 14001 can be used together as an integrated strategy to enhance environmental performance in the tourism industry.

Abstract

ISO 14001 standardı, bir çevre yönetim sistemini geliştirmek için gerekli olan şartları içermektedir. Bu şartlar, sistemin yönetilme şekli ve kuruluşun çevreye duyarlı hale gelecek biçimde yapılandırılması ile ilgili bir referans model oluşturduğu için önemlidir. Literatürde pek çok çalışmada çevresel performansı artırmak için, ISO 14001, atık yönetimi, yeniden kullanım ve yeniden işleme gibi stratejilerin yalın yönetim gibi diğer sistematik süreç iyileştirme yaklaşımlarıyla entegre edilmesi ve desteklenmesi gerektiği ifade edilmektedir. Birçok ampirik çalışma, yalın yönetim ilkelerinin ve araçlarının çevre yönetimine olumlu etkisi olduğunu göstermiştir. Bu çalışma, turizm endüstrisinin en önemli göstergelerinden biri olan çevresel performansı değerlendirmek ve geliştirmek için kullanılabilecek yalın ilkelerin ve ISO14001 çevre yönetimi gerekliliklerinin entegrasyonu için kavramsal bir model sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Çalışmada otel işletmeciliğine özgü süreçler üzerinde durulmuş ve bu süreçler için bütünleşik model ile ortaya çıkan temel kavram, ilke, araç ve performans göstergeleri tanımlanmıştır. Önerilen modelin, turizm sektöründeki otel işletmelerinin çevresel performansının görünürlüğünü artırmaya yardımcı olması beklenmektedir. Yazarın bilgisine göre bu çalışma, turizm endüstrisinde çevresel performansı artırmak için yalın ilkelerin ve ISO 14001'in entegre bir strateji olarak birlikte kullanılabilirliğini değerlendiren ilk çalışmadır.
