A Comparative Analysis of a Newly Developed Plume Rise Formula with a Number of Established Formulae
Abstract
When gases are emitted from a stack, they undergo vertical rise which is called plume rise. Plume rise is an important factor in dispersion modeling of air pollutants. Plume rise is dependent on a number of factors including diameter of stack exit, velocity of exhaust gas, temperature of effluent, speed of wind etc. Various equations have been proposed for prediction of stack plume rise, but most of them are dated back to 50-60s. Recently, Shalkouhi (2023) proposed a modification of the Lucas-Moore-Spurr (1963) formula for prediction of stack plume rise. In the present study, a comparative analysis of the Shalkouhi (2023) plume rise formula with a number of established ones including Holland (1953), Morton et al. (1956), CONCAWE (1966), Lucas (1967), Briggs (1969), Whaley (1969), TVA (1971, 1972) and Padmanabhamurty and Gupta (1980) is done to identify an appropriate methodology for predicting stack plume rise. It is found that the Shalkouhi (2023) equation is an acceptable method to predict stack plume rise in stable atmospheric condition with low and high wind speeds.
