Addressing The Challenges of River Basin Development Project: A Salient Approach to Sustainable Natural Resource Conservation and Regional Development in Nigeria

Abstract

The importance of river basin development projects in Nigeria is immense. The establishment of River Basin Development Authorities in the country, aimed at overseeing the effective management of surface water for improved agriculture, additional drinking water sources, and support for techno-industrial purposes, has significantly contributed to the development of various regions. However, inrecent years, the River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) in Nigeria have faced obstacles that have hindered them from fulfilling their primary objectives to effectively ensure the sustainability of natural resources and foster regional development. This paper explores the diverse obstacles that have impeded the fulfillment of their primary responsibilities, which need to be resolved to ensure the successful functioning of these authorities. The paper equally highlighted certain accomplishments of the project that have positively contributed to the social, economic, and environmental development of the country. In conclusion, the paper asserts that a comprehensive reform encompassing elements such as participatory approach, securing sufficient funding, refining land acquisition and allocation processes, and augmenting staffing and technical capabilities is imperative for the River Basin Development Authorities (RBDAs) to attain improved outcomes and effectively carry out their fundamental responsibilities. This approach underscores the importance of involving all stakeholders in the project's design and implementation through participatory methods. This approach to regional development and natural resources conservation in Nigeria would presents a practical solution to the challenges faced by river basin development projects. It offers a comprehensive strategy that takes into account environmental preservation, economic growth, and inclusive processes. The integration of these elements can contribute to the success of a project that addresses both natural resource conservation and regional development objectives.
