Ziya Gökalp ve Hilâfetin İlgası: Siyasal Düşünce Bağlamında Bir İnceleme
Abstract

Ziya Gökalp and the Abolition of the Caliphate: An Examination in the Context of Political Thought
Abstract
The process of military and political disintegration experienced by the Ottoman Empire following the First World War, the subsequent occupation of Anatolia in the wake of the Armistice of Mudros, and the looming threat to the nation’s independence were the decisive factors in the emergence of the War of Independence. In this struggle -organized under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal Pasha- the rhetoric concerning the preservation of the Caliphate and the Sultanate was initially employed to bolster public support and establish a foundation of legitimacy for the movement. During this period, the lack of a clear legal framework defining the powers and responsibilities of the Caliphate created significant uncertainty for the newly established state structure. The lack of clarity regarding the powers and responsibilities of the Caliphate within a legal framework created significant uncertainty for the newly established state structure. Mustafa Kemal Pasha and his team believed that allowing the Caliphate to become a center of political influence would complicate the reform process, in line with their revolutionary goals. Therefore, the Caliphate gradually became an issue to be resolved within the restructuring of the state. Ziya Gökalp’s views hold a noteworthy place in the intellectual context of these discussions. In the preparation of this research, data from the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey’s State Archives, periodicals of the period, and original and scholarly works were utilized. While the research primarily employs a qualitative research method, descriptive analysis was applied through documents and records obtained from secondary sources.
