Abstract

Year 2026, Volume: 6 Issue: 1 , 1 - 31 , 15.04.2026

Abstract

Migration has been one of the most important dynamics of social change and cultural interaction throughout history. Turkiye is one of the countries most affected by the forced migration movement following the Syrian civil war. Syrians with temporary protection status reside in various cities across Turkiye, with varying housing conditions and economic activities. Konya has become a significant hub for Syrian entrepreneurs, thanks to its large migrant population, thriving commercial sector, and rich cultural diversity. Food and beverage businesses, in particular, stand out as a means of ensuring economic integration and continuity of cultural identity. According to data from the Directorate of Migration Management, as of February 15, 2024, the number of Syrians under temporary protection in Turkiye is 3.167.421. Konya is the country's ninth province, with a population of 119,451. For 13 years, Syrians living in Konya have established businesses operating across various lines in different city districts, particularly in Karatay. Restaurants are the most common among these types of businesses. The study aims to reveal the types, menus, locations, and interactions with Konya's local cuisine, as well as current problems, and interactions with local Konya people, specifically restaurants owned by Syrians living under temporary protection in Konya.
