Gender Discrimination of German Language

Öz

The language supports ideological purposes and it shows a parallel development to sexism in a society and causes in the patriarchal ideological societies an irrelevance and slightness of women. German language has been described as a sexist language due to the unique characteristics of its gender morphology. We try in this study to find out if German is a gender language, to what extent sexism exists in this language, how the indefinite pronouns man and frau are using in that language, and how they influence the speaker's perspective towards the women. In this study, we find that the eliminating of the appearance of sexism markers or an existing negative situation towards women is a difficult and time-consuming process. In addition, the following conclusion is drawing that the female indefinite pronouns are using sometimes ironically. In some cases, the generic masculine generally becomes heterogeneous or asexual, with a frau used regardless of sex. Language is a mirror of thought and consciousness, a result of historical appearance and, accordingly, subject to constant evolution. It grants and allow an equal, gender specific distinction between indefinite pronouns man/frau. As a result, there should be only one development for language, which leads to a gender equality. Since the German language offers a variety of options to use gender equality, masculine Indefinites terms used as a generic term for male and female persons must be avoided. Generally, gender-neutral markers should be used for linguistic equality between man and frau. Indefinites names that only affect frau or man, however, must gendered. For this reason, feminist ideology must first form its own discourse to oppose the patriarchal ideology.
