The Effect of Students’ Academic Departments on General English and Vocational English Academic Success Scores

The aim of this study is to investigate whether there is a statistically significant difference among the average success scores of
General English courses and Vocational English courses of Tourism Faculty students according to the academic department.
This study is a survey model research. Participants are 198 students that take the General English and Vocational English
courses. One-way MANOVA method is in the analysis of collected data. According to the results of the study, there is no
statistically significant difference among the average success scores of General English courses according to the academic
department. However, a statistically significant difference has been found in the average success scores of Vocational English. It
has been determined that the average academic Vocational English success scores of the Department of Tourism Management
students were significantly higher than the Department of Gastronomy students’. Moreover, it has also been determined that
the average academic Vocational English success scores of the Department of Tourism Management students were significantly
higher than the Department of Tourism Guidance students’.
