Analysis of the 10th Grade English Coursebook Count Me In, Taught in State Schools, Within the Scope of 21st Century Skills
Öz
This study aimed to examine the 10th grade English textbook titled “Count Me In”, which was accepted by the Ministry of National Education to be taught in state schools until the end of the 2026-2027 academic year, within the framework of the 21st century skills. The study limited the scope of 21st century skills to 4Cs (communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking). In this qualitative study, document review was performed to investigate to what extent the 21st century skills in question were integrated into the coursebook. Tables, prepared by the researchers of this study under the supervision of two field experts, were used to collect the data. The unit activities were listed according to the four main language skills; listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Then, the skill-based activities were categorized in accordance with the 4Cs in the tables for each unit. The results of the study were reported through frequencies and percentages, calculated through the SPSS programme. The study revealed that critical thinking is the most supported skill, whereas creativity is included least in each unit. The coursebook’s inclusion of the 4Cs were discussed by providing some recommendations for the revision of the coursebook.
