The Situation and Future Effects of Digitization in Ship Brokering

Abstract

Shipbroking is one of the oldest professions in the world and currently going under a paradigm shift through technology. Information technologies bring the parties to a trade closer to each other hence creating a risk over the sustainability of the middleman, the shipbroker. The aim of this study is to examine the innovations and the effects that are expected in shipbroking profession. The study was designed in qualitative method and phenomenology is preferred as the research pattern. The study group of the study consists of 15 participants that are involved in chartering. Structured interview form was used for data collection. Descriptive analysis was performed to analyze the data. Results show that digitalization will continue supporting the shipbrokers in the near future however some threats may occur in a longer period hence shipbrokers must gain additional qualities to survive.

Dijitalleşmenin Gemi Brokerliğindeki Yeri ve Geleceğine Etkileri

Abstract

Gemi brokerliği dünyanın en eski mesleklerinden biri olmasına ile birlikte günümüzde teknoloji temelli bir paradigma kayması yaşamaktadır. Bilişim teknolojileri ticaretin taraflarını birbirine yaklaştırmaktadır ve böylece aracı konumundaki gemi brokerliğinin sürdürülebilirliğine yönelik tehditler oluşmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, gelecekte gemi brokerliği mesleğini ne gibi yeniliklerin beklediğine ve adaptasyon sürecine ilişkin saptamalarda bulunmaktır. Çalışma, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden olgubilim deseni kullanılarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu, Türkiye’de faaliyette bulunan gemi kiralama uzmanlarından oluşan 15 katılımcı oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak yapılandırılmış görüşme tekniği kullanılmış ve verilerin çözümlenmesinde içerik analizi ve betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılmıştır. Ulaşılan bulgular hem nitel hem de nicel anlatımlarla desteklenmiştir. Araştırmanın sonucunda, dijitalleşmenin yakın gelecekte gemi brokerliği mesleğine fayda sağlamaya devam edeceği, fakat sonrasında bazı tehditler oluşturabileceği görülmüştür. Bu nedenle gemi brokerlerinin iş hayatında kalabilmek adına bazı yönlerden kendilerini geliştirmeleri gerekmektedir.
