Passage From Personal Memory To Cultural Memory: Heaney And Dağlarca’s Land Poetry

Abstract

This study focuses on common cultural elements in the poems of one Turkish and one Irish poet in the framework of transmission of cultural memory and the making of cultural identity. The ways in which the passage from personal to cultural memory takes place are interrogated with close scrutiny of the themes and the verbal / poetic features that underlie the poems of Seamus Heaney, an Irish poet who was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1995, and the prominent Turkish modern poet Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca. Heaney’s bog poetry and Dağlarca’s poems in Toprak Ana (1950) particularly revolve around the theme of land. It is discerned in Heaney’s Digging, a poem from his collection called Death of a Naturalist (1966), that a personal memory gradually gives way to the expression of cultural memory. In the same vein, Dağlarca’s poems Buğdayın Sesleri and İstek are characterized by a similar passage and temporal fluidity. To reflect their conception of cultural memory as well as cultural identity, both poets resort to imagery of land and agricultural life in their poetry. In the poetry of both authors, the function of land, its being their society’s livelihood and a source of living as well as labour on the land are all celebrated and idealized. The poems role in the transmission of culture as well as the construction of a sense of self, and their celebratory approaches to land testify to the symbiotic relationship between poetry and cultural memory.

BİREYSEL BELLEKTEN KÜLTÜREL BELLEĞE GEÇİŞ: HEANEY VE DAĞLARCA’NIN TOPRAK ŞİİRLERİ

Abstract

Bu çalışmada kültürel belleğin aktarımı ve kültürel kimliğin oluşturulması bağlamında Türk ve İrlandalı olan iki şairin şiirlerindeki kültürel ortak öğeler ele alınmaktadır. 1995’te Nobel edebiyat ödülünü alan İrlandalı yazar Seamus Heaney ile modern Türk edebiyatının önemli şairlerinden olan Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca’nın şiirlerinin temelinde yer alan konular ve bunların aktarıldığı dilsel/şiirsel özellikler incelenerek bu şiirlerde bireysel bellekten kültürel belleğe geçişin ne şekilde gerçekleştiği irdelenmiştir. Heaney’nin bataklık temalı şiirleri ile Dağlarca’nın Toprak Ana (1950) kitabındaki şiirleri özellikle toprak konusu etrafında dönmektedir. Heaney’nin Bir Doğalcının Ölümü (Death of a Naturalist) (1966) adlı şiir koleksiyonunda yer alan Kazmak (Digging) şiirinde bireysel bir hatıranın yerini yavaş yavaş kültürel belleğe bıraktığı gözlenmektedir. Fazıl Hüsnü Dağlarca’nın Buğdayın Sesleri ve İstek şiirlerinde de benzer bir geçiş ve zamansal akışkanlık söz konusudur. Kültürel bellek ve kültürel kimlik anlayışlarını yansıtmada hem Heaney hem de Dağlarca’nın toprak ve tarımsal yaşam ile ilgili imgelerden yararlandıkları görülmektedir. Her iki yazarın da şiirlerinde toprağın işlevi, ait oldukları toplumların geçim ve hayat kaynağı olması ve toprakla uğraş sırasında harcanan emek idealize edilip yüceltilmektedir. Şiirlerin, hem kültür aktarımı hem de benlik duygusunun inşasındaki işlevsel yönleri gözlenmiş olup toprağa olan kutsayıcı yaklaşımları şiir ile kültürel bellek arasındaki sembiyotik bağı kanıtlar niteliktedir.
